Maytag is still around (not owned by anyone else) and they make their
own washers except for the SAV... models which are the Amana (which
Maytag now owns) washer design which is based on the Speed Queen
washer design.

For complicated appliance designs like most front load washer, I
usually recommend an extended warranty for them but one *from the
appliance manufacturer* and not a store policy or one from a third
party company. That way the manufacturer looks after everything
whether a manufacturing defect or just plain wear and tear from use.
