If the plaster/drywall is wet, I've successfully used a 
stud finder to locate.  This is the kind that measures
the density; an old Zircon.  It was extremely sensitive 
to damp walls.

You might also try probing with an Ohmmeter on hi range.

Yes, there are moisture meters, but probably more than you
want to spend on a one-time.
