Sounds like he ran out to HD and sold you their line at a higher cost. Kraftmaid bought through a distributor other than HD _all_ have 4 sided dovetailed drawers with a _lifetime_ warranty being 3/4" solid wood sides and 3/16" plywood bottom. A contractors price through distributor pays a multiplier of .30 of retail, I get them at .28 retail just because I do a few kitchens a year. Doesn't sound as if your buddy does much business as a distributor, I definitely would be calling him on failure of the units. As already mentioned, you can upgrade to all plywood construction even with a furniture finish all sides. Too bad your buddy failed to show you this.
