Thanks everyone for the replies. The place isn't so dirty that I'd want to get the courts or government involved. It just doesn't seem to be in a condition for a new tenant to move into, but I guess that's subjective. We probably will end up hiring a cleaning service to come as soon as possible. I'll be sure to keep the bill and see if we can be compensated for it somehow. And we do intend to leave it in the same condition as we found it when we move out. I should also note that the landlord has already cashed our checks for the first month's rent and the security deposit. And this is a long distance move, so we're reluctant to give up on this place and start our housing search all over again. I'm sure these factors convinced the landlord that he didn't have to meet our request. I'd consider breaking the lease if he didn't already have so much of our money. Thanks again everyone. I'll try to follow-up in a few days after we move in.
