KEEP DOTTIE SAFE !!
Authorities and Officials stand by and watch !!
STOP THE LAND-GRAB OF DOTTIE LAFORTUNE'S BIDDEFORD, MAINE HOME!
Please distribute widely ---
We, the following, believe that Dottie Lafortune is unlawfully being denied her
right to a jury trial and due process. She is now under danger of a stand-off
with militia in trying to protect her rights.
According to records, accounts and witnesses we believe that city officials,
attorneys and bankers have engaged in an illegal gang-up to rob Ms. Lafortune of
her home. We demand that an immediate moratorium be called by Governor Baldacci
to prevent any attempts of Sheriff's to remove Ms. Lafortune from her home.
All proper authorities and legal channels have been informed of the long train
of abuses against Ms. Lafortune and no proper, lawful and legal action has been
enacted to protect Ms. Lafortune's rights. This illegal land-grab must stop!
Ms. Lafortune must be afforded a fair trial by jury in a court of law.

Wednesday, November 12, 2003 Lafortune's backers 'on alert' Sheriff, Biddeford
police plan no sudden moves in property dispute By TAMMY WELLS/Journal Tribune
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
An armed militia is threatening to use violence to help Biddeford resident
Dorothy Lafortune keep her Graham Street home.
A leader of an Alabama-based group called the Mutual Defense Pact Militia urged
members Tuesday to be ready to come to Maine with enough supplies "for a 10-day
engagement."
Police and public safety officials said they are aware of the threat and take it
seriously.
"We're aware of the various e-mails and messages and are monitoring the
situation. People have a First Amendment right to speak, but their behavior
determines whether or not it calls for a law enforcement response," Maine Public
Safety Commissioner Michael Cantara said today. "We are far from that at this
time. We're watching it."
Lafortune has waged an unsuccessful legal battle to keep her 22 Graham St. home
for more than a year. Last week, the U.S. Suprem! e Court refused to issue an
emergency stay that would have delayed her eviction.
In October, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled Lafortune no longer owns the
property, which was seized by the city for non-payment of taxes and auctioned in
May 2002 to Portland resident Tim Q. Ly for $80,000. As of this morning, the
York County Sheriff's Department had not served Lafortune with papers that would
give her 48 hours to leave the premises.
Floyd Shackelford, a leader of the MDPM, today said his group doesn't want
violence, but is defending Lafortune because she hasn't had a jury trial.
"She said if a jury rules against her, she will leave voluntarily," Shackelford
said in a telephone interview. "We are not interested in a conflict at all, we
are peaceable people."
But in a "high alert" message Tuesday to the militia's 700 members, who include
Lafortune, the one-time congression! al candidate provides a detailed strategy
for defending Lafortune if a decision is made to proceed. It includes "inserting
yourself into and immediately around Dottie's home and providing her with direct
fire support."
The message goes on to say "Dottie and (friend Philip Castora) have plenty of
supplies so all you'll need to bring is your supplies and as much ammunition as
you can carry."
It suggests a staging area at The Barn shopping center on Route 1,
"neutralizing" the Biddeford Police Department by disabling power and telephone
cables, establishing roadblocks and reconnaissance, and placement of
sharpshooters atop the nearby Ledgewood Apartments and St. James School.
No one answered the telephone at Lafortune's home today.
If Lafortune refuses to leave after being served with a civil order to do so,
York County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Maurice Ouellette sa! id today,
the matter becomes criminal. He said removing Lafortune from the property would
be the Biddeford Police Department's responsibility.
Biddeford police spokeswoman Joanne Fisk refused to discuss the situation. Chief
Roger Beaupre did not return a telephone call.
"Naturally we should be seriously concerned," Biddeford Mayor Donna Dion said.
The mayor, who has clashed with Lafortune over the content of a public access
television show hosted by Lafortune, said she has had telephone calls from as
far away as California about the property seizure. One individual, she said,
told her she didn't know how big the movement is.
"You always worry someone (involved in a long-term issue) may lose perspective,"
Dion said of Lafortune. "I'm concerned. Obviously, I'm very concerned."
Ouellette said he takes the situation seriously, too.
"You have to take it se! riously," Ouellette said. "Like domestic violence, a
burglary ... you take it seriously."
