I saw a site once that compared the costs, and Verizon's FreeUp phones came out best, but I don't have the link. Sam's Club is selling a new one, put out by Alltel, that I am thinking about, as they seem to be offering a better deal than Verizon. If you talk to the people at the cellphone store (or mall kiosk), sometimes they have a used, but functionally fine, phone under the counter that they will sell to you cheap. It cost me $30 to set up a FreeUp phone this way, for the phone and an introductory batch of minutes, and I've been quite happy with it, and have used it all over the midwest and west.
