Too much support allows the muscles of the foot to atrophy, which will then lead to all sorts of biomechanical problems. Furthermore, there are special nerve endings in the soles of your feet that sense how much impact there is between your foot and the ground, and allow your brain to minimize the impact; as a result, running barefoot is much less stressful on your knees than running in special running shoes. I can cite the studies, if you like; biomechanics was what I studied in graduate school. LM
