At the CAT factory it is a steel bar that goes over the top of your
shoe to protect the delicate boes from ankle to toes. They tell me the
only thing steel toes do is give you a clean shear point when
something heavy cuts off your toes. This clean shear makes it somewhat
easier to sew your toes back on.
