There are DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R(A) plus several other less mainstream formats. DVD+RW is an erasable format using phase-change media , and DVD+R is a write-once variation of DVD+RW using dye-based medium. The DVD-R is the most compatible format DVD-R does not directly support CSS, regions, and Macrovision, but the newer encoding DVD-R(A) does. In short the recordable DVD compatibility market is a mess right now. If you have a recorder check the manual for compatible media.
