I think the R is very important. If you take away the R, you just have a
drink coaster and AOL provides those for free.

You probably mean with or without the W. CD-R is plain record
one - once it's full you cannot add anything - ever.
CD-RW is ReWritable and is similar to your harddrive in the sense that
you can delete stuff and add new stuff.

First you need to check that your drive supports CD-RW. If it supports CD-RW
it also supports CD-R, but not the inverse.
Then you need decide if you need the more expensive CD-RW. They're commonly
used to back-up a set of data every week, month, or whatever.

The CD-RW take longer to write generally depending on the drive and the
media.
They typically only write at 2x or 4x and max out at about 16x, while CD-R
go up to 52x last I looked.
Another pitfall is that CD-RW cannot be read in all players. If your burning
music, most music
CD players don't support this format and many older CD-Rom drive cannot read
the disc.
