We live in a very dry part of the country and the mucous membranes in our heads dry and crack unless we humidify the air. Dry, cracked mucous membranes are an invitation to disease. In summer, the swamp cooler humidifies the air for us, but during winter we use some frugal Kaz humidifiers. They are just two carbon electrodes that hang into a gallon base. They work great, but sometimes you have to adjust the water conductivity by adding a pinch of salt, or refilling with RO or demineralized water. BTW, be careful of the water quality with the ultrasonic humidifiers. They usually are cold vaporizers and any microbes put into the air will be inhaled. They also can leave a wet counter top. They are also much more expensive than the boiling water types. We used those for awile, but switched to the Kaz units ($20). They work better for us, and the sound of the gurgling water is very restful... Zzzzzz... Caveat
