When I built my house, the difference between the high end air-source heat pump and the geothermal was about US$4K (~$8K vs. ~$12K for complete, ground up installation in new construction). This was almost entirely due to the cost of planting 600 feet of closed heating/cooling fluid loop 6-8 feet deep. But the geothermal was also eligible for US$2800 in utility rebates and state tax credits. The higher efficiency and lower maintenance costs (so they say -- the compressor and exchangers are all located indoors) of the geothermal should pay back the difference in short order. YMMV, of course. Dennis (evil) again (naturally) -- The honest man is the one who realizes that he cannot consume more, in his lifetime, than he produces.
