Sounds like "forced air" of some sort, which might be a heat pump or 
an electric resistance or oil- or gas- or propane-fired furnace. Do you
see big tanks in the basement or outside the house? Do big trucks appear
from time to time with mysterious hoses? Do you have a large noisy round
cylinder or box somewhere outside the house? Does it have AC?

Unless you have an electric resistance furnace, it's probably frugaler
to change where the present system delivers the heat by adjusting vents
than to use electric space heaters...
