It's inexpensive and easy to get a card reader. Many cameras have USB now, but it's easier to eliminate that as an issue - just get a card reader and the camera is compatible with any computer. I don't have to use any special software to transfer pictures - just drag and drop.
Not necessarily that easy in Linux, although things may have changed in
the last 3 years. I bought a 48-meg Lexar Jumpshot CF card because I
knew that somebody had implemented uploading facilities for it.
