You don't know much about either computers or economics do you.

Out of a $750 computer $150 goes to Microsoft for software, leaving $600 for hardware.

Out of $600, about $200 goes for the Pentium processor made in the USA, depending on which one you get.

Another $150 or so goes to the small business computer shop down the street that assembled Bob's computer (no it wasn't "made" in china).

That leaves only $250 or 1/3 for all the imported components. But the imported component prices include the cost of American distributors, truckers, wholesalers, import brokers, freight loaders, etc. There are also license fees, American corporate overhead, and a bunch of other costs that stay in the USA or return to the USA.

When all is accounted for, Bob's "windoze box" is about 90 to 95% American. Those Chinese earning 15 cents per hour put in most of the labor to make components like disk drives, boxes, etc., but don't cost very much.

BTW: For those anti-Bush Dems in the crowd, several corporations are taking advantage of Bush's tax cuts to "repatriate" billions of dollars earned overseas. HP, for example, announced they were bringing home about $2 billion.

And it works the other way too of course. The Chinese have to buy their Intel processors from the USA, software from Microsoft, and switching from Lucent for their phone and network systems, etc.

Bob
