They're not, after you practice a bit.  You just put the 
fabric under the presser foot, make sure you have thread tails
coming off the back end, & press the foot pedal.
Once you got a little used to it, you'd never want to be 
without one again.  When I first got one, I couldn't 
believe how the quality of my sewing increased & 
the time I saved.

One caveat with the Singer serger; it will only take Singer
needles, so keep that in mind.  I use Schmetz, otherwise.
The Schmetz needle shank won't fit into the Singer hole, drat it.
Just so you know.  Also, the Singer serger has a freearm.
That is not always the case with sergers.  Freearms are great
tools.
