How about this...recently I was shopping for a numeric pager and it
seems nowadays they all come with voice mail.  I found one service
that was about $80 for a year - pager included - that was way cheaper
than everyone else.  The 2 issues I would have using this for voice
mail vs just a pager are that the messages are only retained for 12
hrs and can only be 30 seconds long.  I imagine for a bit more money
both could be increased.  It's a local call for me to check messages.

Cheapest local phone service is $20/month with all the taxes and crap
where I live.
