Hi Andy,
The public transportation within Boston is pretty good, and the
railroad service to certain outlying suburbs not bad.  Many of the
places in the 'burbs where people live though, it would be tough to
rely on public transportation to get to work.

In terms of future places to work I was thinking of Providence, RI and
New Haven, CT... in each case I'd need to do a lot of driving for the
Mrs-to-be to be able to have a reasonable train ride to work in Boston
or NYC...

Public transportation takes a lot more time to get to work, so if I
were to suddenly discover my car were down, then I'd end up very late
to work.  On the other hand, with a 2nd car on hand, in theory this
shouldn't cost you more than a couple minutes.
