As with a lot of things, a good camera is not cheap. There is much to
learn, and before spending any money you should ask yourself what it
will have to do, For small snapshots anything giving you more than 2
megapixels and a decent (3 times) zoom is fine. Most camera's work ok
in close-up. If youn want more than that look at the higher end
camera's and buy one of the camerabrands that gets you local service.
Canon is a brand that makes good stuff, I (a freelance photographer
and journalist) use an Olympus 3030 fo the local newspaper.

Oh, and buy a camera that fits your hands. Not so small you have your
fingers before the flash or lens, not so big you need someone to carry
it for you........
