This does not address your problem but points out another problem. 
Our microwave is about the same age as yours and is the same brand. 
During power outages, the lower half of the numbers were out.  It took
well over a month for the the numbers to register as normal for a
large power outage.  Smaller power outages affect the microwave and
take anywhere from 3 to 5 days to return to normal.  I think there is
a flaw in the key pad.
