have you looked into UPS?  There are also small companies that 
specialize in niche markets.  Shipping between china and L.A. definately 
looks like a niche market.  I don't know about the west coast, but I 
know on the east coast there are companies that specialize in certain 
shipping routes between europe and latin america to the US in NJ 
(Newark).  There must be the same type of companies on the west coast. 
Ask around at the Port Authority or the main chamber of commerce.  They 
may also have a phone book listing.  I've noticed this is starting to 
fade away due to companies using web sites but it doesn't hurt to check.
