Before you do work for somebody, you need to have some form of agreement.
That can be a verbal agreement, a signed contract or a purchase order.

Did you do work for somebody? If so, did they agree to pay you for that work
before you did it? If they agreed to pay you for the work, did they do so
verbally or in writing? Are you having trouble collecting from a customer?
