~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What's New at FPIF "Working to make the U.S. a more responsible global leader and partner" http://www.fpif.org/ December 3, 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Introducing a new commentary from Foreign Policy In Focus Israelis and Palestinians Attempt to Jumpstart the Peace Process.. Despite Washington's Support for Sharon By Stephen Zunes The peace plan signed in Geneva December 1 by leading Israeli and Palestinian political figures represents an important step forward. Former president Jimmy Carter -- who was present at the ceremony -- may be correct in noting that "It's unlikely we shall ever see a more promising foundation for peace." The Geneva Initiative shows that a comprehensive negotiated peace between Israelis and Palestinians is possible. The question is whether the United States will allow it to happen. Stephen Zunes is an associate professor of Politics and chair of the Peace & Justice Studies Program at the University of San Francisco. He serves as Middle East editor for the Foreign Policy in Focus Project (online at www.fpif.org).
