White House to Ease Mercury Regulations The Bush administration is working to overturn regulations that would have required coal and oil-fired power plants to make costly improvements that would reduced their mercury and nickel emissions. This according to a report in the Washington Post. The move is seen as a major concession by the Bush administration to the power industry. The Bush administration wants to put in place a "cap and trade" program that would allow utility companies to buy emission credits from cleaner-operating plants and put the credits towards dirtier plants. Environmentalists said the plan would save the utility industry hundreds of millions but not reduce the level of mercury pollution. According to the Washington Post, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevent recently found that 8 percent of women of childbearing age had mercury in their blood exceeding levels deemed safe by the EPA. headlines from: http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=03/12/03/1552200 link to: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A29807-2003Dec2.html = = = = STILL FEELING LIKE THE MAINSTREAM U.S. CORPORATE MEDIA IS GIVING A FULL HONEST PICTURE OF WHAT'S GOING ON? = = = = Daily online radio show, news reporting: www.DemocracyNow.org More news: UseNet's misc.activism.progressive (moderated) = = = = Sorry, we cannot read/reply to most usenet posts but welcome email For more information: http://EconomicDemocracy.org/wtc/ (peace) And http://EconomicDemocracy.org/ (general) ANTI-SPAM EMAIL NOTE: For email "info" and "map" don't work.
