U.S. Fires Guantanamo Lawyers After Criticism The Pentagon has fired a team of military lawyers who had volunteered to defend the detainees held at Guantanamo Bay in military trials. The Guardian of London reports the attorneys were dismissed after they charged the Pentagon's rules governing the cases made it impossible for any of the detainees to get a fair trial. Pentagon: Enemy Combatant Can See Attorney The Pentagon announced Tuesday it would allow a U.S.-born man who has been detained for two years to finally see a lawyer. The man, Yaser Esam Hamdi, has been held as a so-called enemy combatant, a designation that [ACCORDING TO THE GOVERNMENT] allows the government to hold U.S. citizens indefinitely without pressing charges, giving evidence to a court or allowing the detainee access to an attoney. The U.S. said they captured Hamdi in Afghanistan in 2001. While the Pentagon backed down on its refusal to allow Hamdi to see an attorney, it said in a statement that the move should not be treated as a precedent for other cases.
