Please reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Job Title: Guatemala Accompaniment Project Co-Coordinator Supervisor: Executive Director of NISGUA Location: Guatemala City, Guatemala Summary of Responsibilities: The Guatemala-based Co-Coordinator of the Guatemala Accompaniment Project (G.A.P.), which is a program of the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA), will oversee the operation of the Guatemala side of the accompaniment project, in coordination with U.S.-based G.A.P. staff and Guatemala-based NISGUA staff. Description of Project: G.A.P. was born in 1995 in response to a call for international accompaniment from Guatemalan refugee and internally displaced communities who had fled in the 1980s to escape brutal war conditions. After five years, however, it became apparent that the political realities of Guatemala were shifting, and G.A.P. expanded its mandate to reflect these changes. G.A.P. began accompanying massacre survivors in communities who had charged two former dictators and their military high commands with genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. Then, in 2001, G.A.P. began accompanying individuals and organizations targeted for their social justice and human rights work. This team of two is based in Guatemala City. Act as the main contact and support for accompaniers in-country by providing orientation upon arrival, placement coordination, ongoing supervision, exit interviews, and other support as needed. ? Maintain contact with and support Guatemalan communities and organizations with regard to accompaniment efforts and requests ? Provide information and support to U.S. sponsoring communities, which includes but is not limited to, assistance with delegations, speaking tours, annual U.S.gatherings, and occasional fund disbursements for accompaniers and Guatemalan communities ? Develop, implement, and evaluate G.A.P. program activities, which includes making recommendations about the direction of accompaniment and community-to-community relations ? Coordinate with other international accompaniment organizations in Guatemala to receive, evaluate, and respond to requests for accompaniment and for ongoing planning Other Responsibilities: ? Facilitate contact and information flow between U.S. and Guatemala communities ? Write bi-monthly G.A.P. reports, contribute to bi-annual reports for the NISGUA Board, and generate other updates as necessary ? Assist with accompanier selection, training, and assignment decisions ? Be prepared to respond to emergency situations as they arise ? Attend trainings, G.A.P. Gatherings, and other NISGUA and G.A.P.-related events in the U.S. ? Participate in ongoing NISGUA program development work ? Keep up-to-date on the political, economic, and social situation in Guatemala Qualifications: ? Previous experience in a supportive supervisory role ? Previous experience of program management in a non-profit or similar environment (preferred) ? Extended volunteer or work experience in a country other than the U.S. (preferably in Central or Latin America) ? Demonstrated understanding of Guatemalan history and reality, including human rights issues and current political situation ? Solid understanding of the principles of human rights accompaniment and professional commitment to nonviolence ? Oral fluency and written working knowledge of Spanish ? Ability to maintain sound judgment in a crisis ? Excellent written and oral communication skills ? Ability to analyze information ? Ability to work independently, and to organize and prioritize tasks ? Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, evenings, and extended periods of travel within Guatemala and to the U.S. ? Enjoy working with people and be able to motivate volunteers and activists ? Computer literacy, and willingness to communicate extensively via email ? Ability and willingness to travel to and spend time in very rural communities that lack basic services ? Previous advocacy experience (preferred) ?
