Neocons 1] A lecture on Leo Strauss brought to you by The American Enterprise Institute Washington DC Leo Strauss's Perspective on Modern Politics Start: Monday, December 1, 2003 5:30 PM End: Monday, December 1, 2003 7:00 PM http://www.aei.org/events/eventID.478,filter.,type.upcoming/event_detail.asp Media please contact Veronique Rodman at 202.862.4871. The European and American media has recently been rife with dramatic surmises about the possible significance of the impact of Leo Strausss political theory on contemporary American political culture and policy. However, journalists who have recently been moved to theorize in print about Strausss teaching seemingly have not devoted much time to a study of his philosophic corpus. They have advanced extravagant (and even preposterous) claims about what Strauss thought or taught. These assertions have been marked by their lack of substantiation through genuine quotations from, or even through accurate summaries of, what Strauss wrote. This lecture will provide a brief introductory guide to how Strausss writings may be said to offer a deeper understanding of contemporary politics. Thomas L. Pangle holds a university professorship in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Irving Kristol, the self-proclaimed god-father of the neo-conservative movement and father of William Kristol, has written a column and a book on the birth and ideas of the movement. In an article for the Weekly Standard, Kristol praised Bush for giving new life to the neo-conservative movement. A look at the roster of PNAC members and a glance at who holds what positions in the White House shows why Kristol is so proud of Bush...the far right controls the White House, and the far right is on its way to controlling the world.<< 3] *Irving Kristol is author of "Neoconservatism: The Autobiography of an Idea." Irving Kristol The Neoconservative Persuasion full article is at: http://weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/003/000tzmlw.asp >>The cost of this emphasis on economic growth has been an attitude toward public finance that is far less risk averse than is the case among more traditional conservatives. Neocons would prefer not to have large budget deficits, but it is in the nature of democracy--because it seems to be in the nature of human nature--that political demagogy will frequently result in economic recklessness, so that one sometimes must shoulder budgetary deficits as the cost (temporary, one hopes) of pursuing economic growth. It is a basic assumption of neoconservatism that, as a consequence of the spread of affluence among all classes, a property-owning and tax-paying population will, in time, become less vulnerable to egalitarian illusions and demagogic appeals and more sensible about the fundamentals of economic reckoning.<< ################################################################# " Social and economic well-being will become a reality only through the zeal, courage, the non-compromising determination of intelligent minorities, and not through the mass."
