==========================================================================

1)OCTOBER 10TH (THIS FRIDAY) IS THE DEADLINE TO SUPPORT A NATIONAL
PARK SERVICE DECISION TO PROTECT SALT CREEK CANYON, IN CANYONLANDS
NATIONAL PARK, FROM IRREPARABLE HARM

After nearly a decade of controversy, the National Park Service
(NPS) is on the verge of finalizing its decision to protect Salt
Creek Canyon in Canyonlands National Park from the damage caused
by jeeps and other four-wheel drive vehicles. Your comments
supporting the NPS's decision will help ensure that Salt Creek's
irreplaceable cultural resources and unique streamside ecosystem
will remain intact for future generations to enjoy and marvel. Tell
the NPS that you agree Salt Creek should remain permanently closed
to motorized vehicle use (and be sure to describe any personal
experiences that you may have had in the Canyon). The NPS is
accepting public comments through this Friday- October 10th!

Please take a few minutes and follow this link to The Wilderness
Society's webpage which provides an easy way for you to send an
e-mail to the NPS, as well as additional background information on
SUWA's efforts to protect Salt Creek Canyon:
http://ga1.org/campaign/salt_tws

We have also provided additional information on our website about
Salt Creek and SUWA's efforts over the past decade to protect its
unique resources on our webpage: http://www.suwa.org/entry.php?entry_id=452

You can e-mail the NPS directly with your comments at the following
address:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The NPS is also accepting faxed or mailed comments: the fax number
is (435) 719-2300 and the mailing address is: Superintendent,
Canyonlands National Park, 2282 SW Resource Blvd., Moab, UT 84532.
Because the comment deadline is October 10th, we urge you to either
e-mail or fax the NPS your comment letter.

Off-road vehicle groups are trying to change the NPS's mind by
flooding the agency with comments opposing the closure decision.
We need you to help make sure that the NPS hears loud and clear
that it made the right decision to protect this unique resource
from devastating vehicle damage.

Please consider also cc'ing your representative and/or senators on
your comments. This has been found to be effective in previous
circumstances of this nature.

Thanks for your help!!

2)ADDENDUM TO LAST WEEK'S ALERT: LOCATION FOR WOLF FORUM, THIS
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9TH

Where: First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake (569 S. 1300 E.)

When: Thursday, October 9, 7-9 pm

** World renowned wolf biologist Paul Paquet will be the main
speaker, talking about wolf social behavior and ecology. Paul is
the founder and co-director of the Central Rockies Wolf Project and
has worked for the Canadian Wildlife Service, World Wildlife Fund,
and the Conservation Biology Institute during his long career.

** Also on the program will be Suzanne Stone, of Defenders of
Wildlife, to inform the audience about two of Defenders' important
programs: the Wolf Guardian program, which assists ranchers in
preventing and mitigating livestock depredation by wolves; and the
compensation program, which compensates ranchers for verified
livestock losses to wolves.

** Professor Robert Schmidt, of Utah State University, will present
details from the Draft Utah Gray Wolf Management Plan produced by
his students. It will inform all about where wolves are most likely
to appear, about the conditions necessary for supporting them, and
about how many wolves Utah habitat might support.

** Food and beverages and door prizes will be provided.
