It's very doubtful that either militias at the borders or militarized borders would prevent that. Just as it is highly unlikely that the Patriot Act would do much. After all, it really hasn't nailed many terrorists yet. Mostly it's just been of value for going after little folks and, interestingly, corrupt politicos in Vegas. So all the alarmism about threats on the border, just like Pothier's alarmism about "militias," needs to be tempered with a sound dose of common sense rather than just goose-stepping along in abject fear, Red. Frankly and pulp novel material aside, "suitcase nukes" are probably not that big of a threat anyway. Dirty bombs and the like are more probable. Or transported warheads. Or bio-chem. In general, it's the maritime shipping environment that is the common entrance point for bulky items, the category into which most of these would fit. And frankly, I don't see how "militias" in the ports would help much, either. In terms of the bio-chem stuff, I shudder to think if a "militia" tried to handle a situation involving those. They simply don't have the material or skill and probably wouldn't recognize the threat until too late. Not that I think even elite troops would do better. It's not an easy thing. Mr. Wizard
