Personal Firewall Recommendation

I would Like to get a freeware Firewall for a personal computer I have a
standard 56k dial up connection I would like to use this to stoop my
computer being used as a e-mail repeater (got one from myself the other
day!!)

I am thinking of upgrading to broadband soon will the 'wall work with the
different tech?

Thanks for advice hopefully this question will help others as well,
surprised to see no-one else with same question!
