And I sympathize, because actually I live in the countryside myself, and also without public transport since our beloved council, without any warning, abolished the entire bus service for four or five villages this summer, ours included! I'd buy a horse if there were anywhere to hitch it in town... As you say, it does sound as if your rembrance is correct. He would naturally know about the scores because his early publisher and Ricordi's rival Lucca also published Wagner in Italy, and Wagner-interested friends like Muzio, and later Boito, kept him in touch.
