I vote for the period between 1863 and pre-Ludwig 1864. Almost 4 revolutionary works completed (Rheingold, Walkuere, Siegfried* and Tristan und Isolde -without counting major changes to Tannhaeuser-) having had the chance to premiere none of them. 14 years without premiering any work (Lohengrin 1850) and 19 since he was present at the opening night for a new work (Tannhaeuser in 1845). Also, Minna was dead by then and the whole Wesendonck affair had brought only disappointment. On top of that, he had nowhere he could call home being a bit of a Wanderer himself. What do you think?
