cantaloop (& pop music)

First my apologies for never learning to cut and paste.
In response to Meredith's query about Cantaloop , the whole title is
Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia). I point this out only because the rest of the
title might jar some people's memories about the "lyrics". The song, by
the way, is based on an instrumental: Herbie Hancock's classic
"Cantaloupe Island".
As for art vs. pop music, let's face it, there is always some music
being made for the joy of making music and some made for strictly
commercial concerns. And label owned tunesmiths writing for label owned
"talent" predates even my long ago youth.
This system has produced a great deal of memorable music as well as
countless forgettable (and even regrettable) songs.
And as great as Hoagy Carrmicheal's classic 'Stardust" is I suspect a
look at the pop charts from that time would reveal more than there share
of clunkers.
I personally don't care for the most of the genre's that dominate modern
pop charts but these always change with successive generations of youth
(read: new consumers) since these are the people who drive the
"business" of music. At the risk of overgeneralising I think that
teenagers tend to seek something new(from older generations) and the
same(as their peers). These same factors shaped our own tastes in/views
on pop music in our youth.
And of course let's not forget that modern programming and attempts at
hitmaking tend to oversatuarate us even with things we do like. Which is
one reason most ectophiles ( I suspect) avoid commercial radio to
begin with.
Apologies too if this was an overly simplistic rant but I felt it
addressed recent topics
