For the attention of Postgraduate students: LAST CALL FOR PARTICIPATION "Square pegs in round holes? The relationship between empirical research and theoretical frameworks" 7th Human Centred Technology Postgraduate Workshop December 15th - 16th 2003 http://www.cogs.susx.ac.uk/lab/hct/hctw2003/index.html The Human Centred Technology group in the School of Informatics, University of Sussex, will be hosting its popular annual postgraduate workshop at the University of Sussex in Falmer, Brighton on the 15th and 16th December 2003. This event is open to all postgraduate research students. It offers an opportunity to meet other research students and to take part in a forum for the exchange of expertise, the confirmation of existing collaborative relationships and the establishment of new collaborative communities. The heading of HCT covers a wide range of interests within which common research questions are considered from differing perspectives. The diverse and interdisciplinary nature of this area can restrict the opportunities available to students for peer review, feedback and discussion of their work or the process of completing a postgraduate qualification. This workshop will give postgraduate students a chance to discuss their work and also hear presentations from leaders at the forefront of Human Centred Technology Research. The theme for this year's workshop is "Square pegs in round holes? The relationship between empirical research and theoretical frameworks." Is your research 1) grounded in theory or 2) looking for a theory? In particular, issues the workshop addresses: - How is interactivity affected by the characteristics of the user and by the characteristics of the system? - What do the user and the system need to know about each other? - The nature and variety of scientific theories: which are appropriate for HCT-area research? - The nature and variety of empirical studies: which are appropriate for HCT-area research? - Adoption of strategies - experimentation, hypothesis testing, modelling, design or invention? If you are a postgraduate student researching humans using digital technology then we want to know how what you are doing fits in to this theme. The workshop will provide current postgraduate students to present their work as a poster, "snapshot" or full presentation as well as the opportunity to participate in breakout discussion sessions. ** Invited speakers / Discussants include: - Professor Peter Cheng - Dr Geraldine Fitzpatrick - others to be confirmed
