IBM DONATES CODE TO OPEN-SOURCE PROJECT | CNET IBM has donated source code to an open-source project in an effort to create more sophisticated development tools for building graphical interfaces. Software consortium Eclipse on Tuesday announced that IBM's contribution will form the basis of the Visual Editor Project. SCO TAKES $9 MILLION CHARGE TO PAY LAWYERS | Reuters SCO Group Inc., which is suing International IBM over a copyright dispute, on Tuesday said it would take a charge of nearly $9 million to cover a payment to its lawyers. High-tech workers concerned about the offshore outsourcing of U.S. jobs conducted a sidewalk protest October 27 at a Forrester Group conference titled "Extending your business reach using the Internet." The Internet is used extensively in offshoring. Picketing on the sidewalk in front of the Westin Copley Hotel, protestors armed with signs and leaflets called for corporations and government to stop offshore outsourcing, which they say is damaging the U.S. economy. WashTech/CWA members and supporters handed out leaflets and talked to people about the more than three million jobs that are predicted to move out of the country in the next 10 years.

Citing an "arms race" in the ongoing spam wars, the company defends its patenting of a technology to thwart antispam filters. The patent, awarded to AT&T on Nov. 4, describes a "system and method for counteracting message filtering." The patent details a way to trick filters that compare digital messages to known pieces of spam, altering each message so that no two are exactly the same.

nternet attacks are getting more numerous and menacing, network protection company Internet Security Systems concluded in a report released Tuesday. The survey found that 725 new software flaws were found in the third quarter of this year, down slightly from 727 found in the second quarter. However, the 823 new worms and viruses that appeared between July 1 and September represented a 26 percent increase from the previous three months.

AT&T Wireless on Tuesday flipped the switch on a wireless Internet network it claims is the fastest in the United States. The carrier said subscribers can now surf the Web or download games at speeds averaging 100kbps to 130kbps, about two times faster than any nationally launched wireless Internet network. A carrier spokesman said subscribers won't be charged extra for the faster service, but they will have to buy new cell phones or modems.

Verizon Communications will begin selling Internet telephony services to broadband customers early next year, a company spokesman confirmed Tuesday. Verizon spokesman Eric Rabe said that by the first quarter of 2004 the company plans to begin offering unlimited dialing between broadband-enabled computers for a flat fee, a feature now included in most voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) plans. It will later expand its service to provide local, long distance and international calls between computers and traditional phones.

Computer Associates International plans to give away security software to consumers to stop them from spreading computer viruses-- but the deal could undermine the strength of its competitors. The deal, announced Tuesday, allows each consumer to download for free CA's eTrust EZ Armor software, which includes virus protection and a personal firewall. Customers of the security software company also can receive a free year of updates to fend off the latest threats.
