Although, I do admit that you make me feel better about going back at age 24. I just returned from a 10 month tour in Iraq and finally feel that I can safely attend school now that monkey is off my back. Hello, after reading Mr. Szepietowski's "Aspiring Game Programmer Seeks Expert Advice", I decided to ask a bit of advice for myself. I am a 29 year old (yes, that's not a typo) college student who has been trying to get a degree in Computer Science since he first entered college at 18. The reason it has taken this long to get this far is not any prolem with my studies, but a lack of reliable funding. I am concerned that graduation at such a late age with serve to discredit me in the game (or any) industry. I was once fortunate to get a job in the industry for about seven months, when the place I was working for was bought out, and a "reorganization" occured. This has actually made it harder for me to get a job, due to employers considering me "overqualified", and of course nowadays there is no way I can get back into the industry without that degree.
My ultimate questions are: Will getting a degree at the late age of 32 (or later) sour my capabilities of gettting into the industry, and if so, is there anyway of salvaging my career ruined by unfortunate mistakes and a lack of fiscal opportunity?
I got my Computer Science degree when I was 34 and was out of the software development industry from 1994 to 2001 when I obtained my current position (at the age of 49). It's not in the game industry, so I have to do that on my own time, put it IS programming.
Get the degree!
Bob
