I don't quite agree with you.  Based on the game industry's output, I'd
hazard a guess that 50% of commercial game designers are not broadly
experienced in many genres, nor looking outside the game industry for
sources of inspiration.  I think you are a minority even among Game
Designers.  I think the majority of them are self-serving and
self-referential, but I don't want to put a hard % on that.  Some *may* want
to do more, but value their income streams and big project resources more
than risk taking for its own sake.
