The only way you can mess up a 2D camera is if you have bad zooming. For instance, Stronghold had a 2D isometric engine and fixed zoom levels. I found one zoom level to be too close, and the other to be too far away. I've played other 2D games with fixed zoom levels, and I haven't had this problem. In those other games, they made correct choices about screen resolution, art size, and zoom level. You do need to make a choice though. You can't assume 2D scaling HW, a lot of cards don't have it because 2D hasn't been important for a number of years now. Of course you can do "2D under 3D as textures," then you can scale to what you like.
