2D will *always* have simple camera manipulation.  That's the nature of the
beast.  3D will *always* have more complications to consider, until such a
time as we're plugging the electrodes directly into our brains.

The only way you can mess up a 2D camera is if you have bad zooming.  For
instance, Stronghold had a 2D isometric engine and fixed zoom levels.  I
found one zoom level to be too close, and the other to be too far away.
I've played other 2D games with fixed zoom levels, and I haven't had this
problem.  In those other games, they made correct choices about screen
resolution, art size, and zoom level.  You do need to make a choice though.
You can't assume 2D scaling HW, a lot of cards don't have it because 2D
hasn't been important for a number of years now.  Of course you can do "2D
under 3D as textures," then you can scale to what you like.  Not sure about
the quality of the artwork as it scales though.
