It happens if you use server side rendering, that is,
standard X fonts.

This indicates you are using client side rendering, that is,
TTF fonts from your windows/Fonts directory (and maybe other
directories specified in your config file).  Put some more
fonts there (the Windows Core Fonts are available on the
Web), and it should work better.  Or remove all, and you
will fall back to the X fonts.
