Which brings up an idea for the OP.

I don't think we can tell you what happened but we can, perhaps, help 
you if it happens again in the future.

Run this query now:

SELECT name, value
FROM v$parameter
WHERE isdefault = FALSE;

Save the result set.

Next time something happens ... run the query again and compare the two 
results.
