Problem with adding values in control

I have an unbound text box that is supposed to add the previous fields
to display a total.

the text box has the controlsource of:
=([finances]+[leisure]+[visitfriends]+[leisurealone]+[bestfriend]+[outsideshopping])

instead of displaying a total, it displays each individual value.

(instead of 6 which is 1+1+1+1+1+1 it displays 111111)

Ideas?  Thanks!
