    nPos = InStr(YourString, "-")
    GetFirstPart = Left(YourString, nPos)
End Function

You call this function like this:

Dim strFirstPart

strFirstPart = GetFirstPart("ABCD123-TOP")

and strFirstPart would then contain "ABCD123" ...
