codec problem? windows explorer crashes on mpg folder open

Hi all,

Please can someone help me,

I have windows xp pro, when I open a folder (with explorer) which has
many mpg files in it, explorer crashes, giving the following error
code:

AppName: explorer.exe    AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106   ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.1106    Offset: 000255e9

Presumably this is a codec problem.  However I don't want to uninstall
codecs to find out, as then some programs need re-installing
