Microsoft Explorer Windows Popping Up

I am using Windows XP and dialing in using AOL. For the past week
before I even sign on I get many, many blank Explorer windows popping
up and try to close them via my task manager. I have no luck closing
them and have to shut
down. Sometimes I am lucky enough to sign on and be online for a short
time then they start appearing again. Can someone out there please
advice me in regard to what the problem may be and how to remedy it.
