probblem with xp

I am haveing probblems using the windows update feture in windows xp
pro.When I run it I get a message that says windows update error.When
I called the computer manufacture they told me to reinstall the whole
operating system.I would like to try something else .If any body has a
diffrent solution to my probblem it would be greatly apprechiated.
