If your system is a MS Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, or XP), or AIX (4.3 or 5.1), or Solaris, (2.6, 2.7, or 2.8), you'll want to run something like the DPMonitor, ( http://www.deltekonline.com ). This will show you graphically how your system runs with your current memory, and after you install the additional memory. It will show a lot more than just memory usage. It will show all sorts of interesting operational dynamics, including swap, CPU, Disk & Network I/O, and a whole lot more. There is a free, 10-day Trail Evaluation license available, and the product is downloadable off the website.
