BBS stands for "Bulliten Board System". In the early days of computing, people would use a computer and a modem, and dial directally into a BBS. Everything was in pure text, rather than all of the fancy pictures, animations, etc of the internet. They came before usenet, and can be considered an early form of a newsgroup. There are still many today, and many of them you can access over the internet. Many of them today seem to be more focused twords games than newsgroups and messages. It is likey that you already have the tool to view them. Copy-and-paste the following links into your browser to see some examples: telnet://time.darktech.org telnet://x-bit.org comp.bbs.misc is simply a modern newsgroup than was ment to be used to talk about BBSs.
