I had that same problem, I have the same system specs and sound card
as you except for the ram (I have 256mb)

Anyway, it seems C-media released some sound card drivers that were
actually for XP but labeled them for windows 98. That might be your
problem, because thats what happened to me when I tried to upgrade my
drivers.
