I notice Lexar have 4GB CompactFlash cards available (Flash memory, not
microdrives).  Maybe other manufacturers have larger, I haven't really
looked.

But, you can take a CompactFlash card, and with a simple passive adapter
plug it into an IDE controller on your motherboard, and boot from it.  Any
CompactFlash card is supposed to emulate an IDE device if wired properly.
I've done this at work, though I managed to fit the whole operating system
and application into a 128MB card.

Standard motherboards will let you attach four IDE drives without adding
additional controllers.  Thats 16GB, if you've got the money.  The first
supplier I checked had 2GB cards for 390 UKP each.
