I notice Lexar have 4GB CompactFlash cards available (Flash memory, not microdrives). Maybe other manufacturers have larger, I haven't really looked. But, you can take a CompactFlash card, and with a simple passive adapter plug it into an IDE controller on your motherboard, and boot from it. Any CompactFlash card is supposed to emulate an IDE device if wired properly. I've done this at work, though I managed to fit the whole operating system and application into a 128MB card. Standard motherboards will let you attach four IDE drives without adding additional controllers. Thats 16GB, if you've got the money. The first supplier I checked had 2GB cards for 390 UKP each.
