RAMDAC chips?

I was considering adding VGA output to a micro-controller project of mine.
Are there are any RAMDAC chips available for hobbyists?  I figured using a
RAMDAC like the old Bt chips for PC's would be the easiest way to transform
some RAM into a video buffer.  I'm aware of the VGA timing and I could
always make a generic microcontroller function as a RAMDAC but that wouldn't
be any fun.  Does anybody know of any sources for RAMDACS?
